Q&A with Melissa Burmester author of Ginger High

Read my review of Ginger High - Melissa's Webpage

About the author:I am presently living in East Moriches, NY with my twin brother and my parents. I have been writing about vampires and the supernatural since I was twelve years old. I have written a few short stories but "Ginger High" is my first novel. I am attending Westhampton Beach High School. I am planning to be a writer and a teacher.

Melissa, welcome to Reading With Monie and thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

1. Please tell us a little about your background and your book, Ginger High.
My name is Melissa and I am 15 years old. I published Ginger High when I was 14, a couple of months before my birthday. Ginger high is a school for students with special powers. The story opens in 1901 where a series of murders take place and all the victims have bite marks on their neck. Could it be a vampire? The story then advances to modern day where a young girl, Daisy, attends Ginger High after her old school burns down. Daisy befriends Amanta, Matthias, and Tearu who traveled through a portal from the Kingdom of Animist. Animist is a parallel universe where the people living there have supernatural powers. They were sent to the school to help solve the mystery. The plot includes the supernatural powers of vampires and magical powers of those who can teleport, heal others and create fire. Daisy realizes that she has a special power and has to learn how to live with it. This is the first book in the series.

2. How did you come up with the idea for this book?
There was an anime show called Mew Mew Power that I watched when I was younger. It helped me with my ideas for the book. For example, in the anime series there was five girls that turned into animals and had powers. I got the idea of powers from that series. For the vampires, I used to watch the series Angel.

3. There are some very unique names in the book. How did you pick the names?
Lol. Yeah. I got the name ‘Amanta’ from my 6th grade Social Studies teacher, and the other names I just made up.

4. What actors/actresses would you choose to play the main characters in your book?
Daisy- Dakota Fanning because… well, I like her. She’s a really good actress.

Amanta and Matthias- Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s sad that Heath isn’t with us anymore. He would have played perfectly for Amanta or Matthias. So I think.

Taeru- I’m not really sure who will play him. Someone that’s funny and love to make a fool out of himself with girls… that could be anyone.

Siege- Johnny Depp. I don’t know why… only that I love him.

Yolanda- Emily Osment. She could also be Daisy as well but I see her fitting in more with Yolanda even though in the first book there isn’t much about her.

And for the others: I don’t know. Yet. Lol.

5. Do you plan on writing as a career?
Yes, I am. I can’t think of anything else to do yet so I might just stick with writing for now.

6. What's the biggest obstacle you faced when writing Ginger High and how did you overcome it?
I found the editing process to be a challenge. I had the help of an editor and it made the process smoother.

7. What book are you currently reading?
I am reading The Smart One and the Pretty One by Claire LaZebnik.

8. What books do you have in the pipeline?
I am working on the sequel to Ginger High.

BookBlips: vote it up!
