Description of Book:
Erika Luna is a thirty-something scientist living and working in
What’s a scientist to do when slapped with pain so deep it interferes with breathing? Try to cure it, of course! This is the premise of Emmy award-winning writer and producer Anjanette Delgado’s delightfully funny and touchingly poignant debut novel, THE HEARTBREAK PILL (Atria Books; $14.00; April 2008).
Imagine what your life would be like if you had a switch, an interrupter of sorts, located somewhere in an unobtrusive part of your body, let’s say on your calf, like a tattoo. See yourself pressing this lever, pin, or button, and being able to control the most uncontrollable part of your body: your heart. You wouldn’t suffer over what isn’t good for you. You wouldn’t cry for what cannot be. You’d just live. You’d be happy.
This is exactly what Erika Luna dreams of after her über successful and sexy husband Martin leaves her for one of his assistants. Sure, she has a strong support group: her perpetually optimistic gay father and his ultra feminist live-in lover, her dramatic best friend Lola, a non-profit theater organizer obsessed with surrounding herself—and Erika—with positive energy, and her recently hired divorce lawyer who also considers herself a spiritual advisor. But it seems that ever since her Humpty Dumpty of a heart had fallen off the wall and turned into a spackled eggshell wall treatment straight out of a Martha Stewart magazine, she is incapable of a logical, methodical, or scientific decision, much less an intelligent one. Erika just wants to be well, sane, and happy again. Immediately.
She’s a woman of science, a researcher; a woman of arguments, facts, and reason. So how can she allow heartbreak to turn her into a raving lunatic? She promises herself that she will come up with a plan—a pill—that will end heartbreak forever. She’s determined to be the absolute leader of humiliated wives and broken hearts the world over.
And with that vow, Erika begins a journey of healing and self-discovery. When Martin left her, she was forced to say good-bye to the life she’d always been afraid of losing and quiet the doubts of her heart. But perhaps, time does heal all wounds, and with the help of her motley crew of a “family”—which now includes a dashing neighbor who works as a director at a domestic violence shelter, she learns to view herself as a person of worth, a woman who has talent, and a woman who must trust herself to love again. And in the end, she realizes that she can’t eliminate love’s pain—because through it we learn to grow as people.

Question for the author: How did you come up with the idea for this book?
wandanamgreb(at)gmail(dot)com
Hi Everyone, Thank you for stopping by. I'm sorry the author hasn't stopped by yet. I'll be checking in with her to see if she is ok. She's been suffering health problems lately. I think she came up with the idea of the book from her own experience. Since the book has come out, she has received tons of message from people attesting to how this book help them. In fact one message was from a teacher who said she uses it in her classromm because many of you young women don't know how to deal with heartbreak. There's a lot of stuff about being in love and being happy, but nothing on how to deal with a break up. The teacher went on to say many of the girls become depressed or contemplate suicide because they believe their life is over. Delgado's book has help these young girls find a new path to overcome the woes of heartbreak.
Thanks to all who visited today. And good luck to the winner.

Hi Everyone, thanks for all your comments and support. And especially Jo Ann for letting you guys know some of the things I'm dealing with.
I'm going to try to answer some of the posters who had specific questions.
Bingo asked about genres... my favorite 3 are the novel, and even when there's a murder, or when there's science involved, it's always about women, so I'd say women's literature. I also like poetry and the dramedy-style series format.
Wanda asked how I'd come up with the idea for the book. Well, It came from working in news all those years and seeing perfectly sane people do insane things when heartbroken. It's probably why I seldom produce news anymore. :)
Benita asked if I teach writing. I do, but wish I had time to do it more often. I teach a course in Miami called "Finish your novel the TV way," and one of my students just finished her novel using the method. Because of time, what I'm doing more of these days are shorter workshops where I can point people in the right direction both as a writer and as an editor. You can check out where I'm teaching or speaking on my blog: http://wiselatinawoman.wordpress.com...
Great questions, by the way.
Thanks Aik and Jake for spreading the word. And thanks to all of you for your interest, and the enthusiasm that comes through on every post.
Finally thanks to Monie for hosting me. What a lovely community of readers you've built!
I'd love to hear your own feedback of the book.
Much love and good energy to all of you. Feel free to find me on FB, Twitter, or on my site, www.anjanettedelgado.com and ask questions once youve read the book. It takes me a bit, but I answer them all.
Un abrazo... Anjanette
I'm always searching for something unique for my book club and to add to my classroom library, this seems to fit the bill.

Does your course "Finish Your Novel the Tv Way" offer any advice for the author who forsees a blockbuster and would like to write the movie script for themselves?
