Blog Tour and giveaway: Days of PREY featuring John Sandford's amazing series

WINNER: Darby

John Sandford's website

In order to celebrate the May 18th release of Storm Prey, the 20th novel in the Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford I have been given the chance to read and review number 12 in the series, Chosen Prey originally released in May 2002. Here's a quick questionnaire the publisher put together to give you a little teaser about Sandford's books.

What is Lucas doing when he first appears in the book? Lucas is sitting with a woman in the window seat of a cafe musing about the dreary weather they've been experiencing in Minneapolis. They're two weeks away from Spring and it seems like they haven't seen the sun in months.

Lucas’s occupation or professional role? Minneapolis Deputy Police Chief

Lucas’s personal status (single, dating, married): Lucas is dating the woman he was in the cafe with, Weather Karkinnen. He was previously engaged to Weather but that ended when she was taken hostage by a crazed biker in one of Lucas' earlier cases.

Lucas Davenport is a known clothes-horse; did you notice any special fashion references? In Chosen Prey the fashion emphasis was more on the killer than Lucas. He had an obsession with expensive clothes that he couldn't easily afford but most of his kills had enough cash or jewelry that he could pawn to keep him in fancy duds for a while.

What was the crime/case being solved? When the body of a woman who disappeared 18 months ago is found, a connection is made to several cases of nude drawings mailed to women who swear they've never posed nude. The investigation leads to the discovery of a mass grave and the media dubbing the killer "The Gravedigger".

Does the title of your book relate to the crime? The title Chosen Prey has ties to the crime because all the victims are chosen because of their looks and lifestyle. They are all petite blondes involved in the arts.

Who was your favorite supporting character, good or evil? My favorite supporting character is Marcy Sherril, the homicide detective nicknamed Titsy. She was shot in a previous book and is itching to get back to work. In Chosen Prey she tentatively returns to work to coordinate the investigation from behind a desk.

What was your favorite scene or quote? My favorite scene is when a potential victim convinces Lucas to let her be bait. Lucas reluctantly agrees and gets way more than he bargained for from the so called victim.

Finally, how do you envision Lucas Davenport?  If he were to be portrayed in a movie, what celebrity would play him? This is a real tough one. He's described as a large, heavy shouldered, dark complected man with blue eyes and I can't think of anyone that fits that bill. He's also described as having a scar that runs down his forehead, across an eyebrow and across his cheek so this craggy look reminds of me of a young Clint Eastwood. He just needs a deep tan but I lack the Photoshop skills so use your imagination. LOL

LATE BREAKING ADDITION: I think a young Paul Newman would also work.

Before I discovered the endless availability of books through online trading I was better able to keep up with my favorite series books so I have actually read up to book 10 in the series. Reading Chosen Prey was like catching up with an old friend and I can't wait to read #11 and #s 13-20!

The blue eyes threw me off too but then I thought.. it's not that important since they have blue contact lenses! So I went with Dwayne Johnson- The Rock. He's got all the other physicality.. just not the blue eyes!

John Sandford won the Pulitzer in 1986 for a series of stories about a midwestern farm crisis.

I haven't read a book by John Sandford in a long, long time. There are 20 Prey Series books. I like that you can read one of them without having to read them in order. I am starting at the libary with the oldest book and start reading all of them. Thanks for the chance to win. ybutler@oppcatv.com

Something that interested me about the author - He's also the author of two non-fiction books, one on plastic surgery and one on art.

I love Sandford's Prey series. When I read them I always picture a young Sam Elliot in the role--the voice, the smart-mouth attitude, the clothes. Thenks for the great contest. I'd also recommend Sandford's Kidd books, which use the author's knowledge of art quite a bit.

I enjoyed reading "Letter from a Killer"! Fascinating stuff. I want to write a True Crime novel. Perhaps I'll write to Mr. Sandford. I'd like to know if he wrote back. And I'm thinking of writing to James Kelly!

I have been in love with Lucas since I first read him so of course I have read every book and can't wait to read #20!!!!!
From John's website, I was reminded that his real last name is "Camp" and personally I think he could of kept his last name for I'm forever misspelling Sandford/Sanford!!!!
Thanks for the post and the opportunity!

I think him winning the John Pulitzer in 1986 is an awesome award. I am sure he is very proud of winning this because of his writing.
